Indigenous Diabetic Foot Program

Welcome to the Indigenous Diabetic Foot Program [IDFP].

On 1st July 2008, SARRAH gifted the IDF project to Jason Warnock. This reflects the support and 'seeding' of a member's idea, assisting the member to 'grow' the idea into a sustainable program. Jason is grateful for all the support SARRAH has provided during this exciting journey. "The Indigenous Diabetic Foot project enabled me to develop some badly needed resources for Indigenous people and the health workers and health professionals working with them. The goal has always been to prevent diabetic foot amputations. It is now time to release the ties with SARRAH and forge new partnerships. The IDF Program will always be closely associated with SARRAH and I will continue to promote SARRAH as the Program moves across rural and remote areas of Australia. Thank you."

The IDF Program strives to provide quality, positive, evidence-based educational resources and workshops for Indigenous people and those who care for them.

The educational tools are designed to encourage Indigenous people with diabetes, Indigenous Health Workers and other health professionals, to become more actively involved with the management of the diabetic foot. With better understanding of the management and early identification of foot conditions, the expectation is to prevent foot ulceration and amputation.

The IDFP webpages provide clear representation of the educational tool and other resources developed for the care of the diabetic foot. Click on the links to find additional information.

Experience has shown that all interested health professionals and health workers benefit greatly from participating in an ‘IDFP workshop’. The confidence gained enables a better understanding of how best to use the resources developed. The IDF CD-ROM is only available by attending such a workshop. The additional resources; videos, posters, stickers, screening form, and card set are available by ordering by mail order.

The IDFP workshop and resources will enhance the ability of health professionals and health workers to deliver appropriate and evidence-based information regarding the early identification and management of the diabetic foot. The resources are not intended to provide clinical management knowledge or skills rather they provide a consistent, efficient and effective approach to diabetic foot management. At all times, foot care management remains the responsibility of the multi-disciplinary health professional team.
